After working with a few different design programs this weekend, I decided it may be a bit quicker to just create graphics with Tux Paint (seriously).
If you don’t know this program, it’s basically a super cool, easy to use, open source design app for kids ages 3 -12. You can install it in various languages (over 80 translations!) and it runs on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. Being open source, it’s of course free to use, and a gallery of designs from around the world is here.
I would recommend also installing the Rubber Stamps add-on package. If you know anyone with kids (or looking for a fun desktop app), definitely let them know about this software.
